Pete Gallego Statement on Redistricting
01/23/2012
On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington overturned the Texas congressional map drawn by a Texas panel of three judges in San Antonio. The Court has asked the panel of judges to redo the map and, rather than crafting an entirely new map, to base its map on the one initially drawn by the Texas legislature.
Many have asked what this means for our campaign. While the redistricting process has been frustrating, I am not at all discouraged by the Court’s decision. First, there seems to be general consensus among observers in both Washington & San Antonio that the 23rd Congressional District as drawn by the legislature violates federal law.
Second, and regardless of how the district boundaries may change, the 23rd Congressional District will remain very competitive for the right kind of Democrat – as it has always been. That’s why I continue to spread my message of fiscal responsibility, job creation, and good old-fashioned Texas common sense to the independent-minded voters of the 23rd District.
I look forward to the road ahead. I am blessed to be surrounded by so many supporters like you who have contributed their time, talent and treasure to my campaign. What my mother told me as a young boy is still every bit as relevant today, “Pete, it always works out in the end, and if it`s not working out, it`s not the end.”
With your help and God’s blessing, the end of this campaign will come in November, when, working together, we all share in a wonderful and hard-fought victory!
