Pete is a proven leader who can get things done by working well with both Republicans and Democrats - something that remains all too rare in D.C. these days. Below are just some of the priorities Pete will fight for on our behalf.
There’s an unquestionable connection between access to education and a better future. Education opened the door to opportunity in my life, and I believe all Texas should have a shot at a better future. In the state legislature, I fought attempts to cut $5.4 billion from public education. Rather than using any of the $6 billion available in the state’s savings account known as the Rainy Day Fund, the legislature opted to leave Texas schools underfunded by billions of dollars and shortchange our students. We must make a national commitment to our children by improving our sch…
I strongly believe we owe a great debt to the men and women who defend and have defended our country. We must make sure that we are supporting local military families and veterans. We need to make sure they receive prompt and high-quality care at VA clinics, increase funding to programs that provide aid for wounded veterans and support programs that help these men and women to find jobs once they get home. As the son of a World War II veteran, I take these issues very personally. And as a former member of the House Armed Services committee, I am proud to be able to be a…
Our country is made up of immigrants who made the journey to the United States in search of the American dream. But we all know that our immigration system is broken. I am a strong supporter of comprehensive immigration reform, including beefed up efforts to improve border security to keep criminals out and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in this country who pay a fine, pay back taxes, learn to speak English and stand in line. Comprehensive immigration reform will not only make our country safer, it will also make our economy stronger.
I strongly support the DREAM Act, which would let young people who were brought to this country as children, graduated from high school and stayed out of trouble, to earn a path to citizenship through military service or by going to college. I was proud to vote for the Texas DREAM Act, and I continue to look forward to voting for the federal DREAM Act in Congress.
Medicare and Medicaid
I strongly support expanding Medicaid in Texas, which will immediately provide 1 million poor, working uninsured Texas families with health care coverage, but also make sure Texas taxpayers help people in Texas, rather than sending their federal taxes to states like California and New York. I understand that Medicare is what keeps many seniors from falling into poverty. I've always opposed efforts to cut Medicare or turn it into a voucher program. Instead I support efforts to reduce waste and fraud and to lower prescription drug costs, which will save billions for seniors and reduce t…
There are some parts of this region that, even today, do not have access to running water or proper sewage services. I worked to provide 171 families with running water for the first time and will continue to help people, regardless of where they live, access services that most of us take for granted.
The oil and gas industry in Congressional District 23 is a big reason that the U.S. is now a net exporter of crude oil for the first time since the 1950s. Making the most of our domestic fossil fuel resources not only creates jobs we sorely need but also moves us toward energy independence from unstable regions. And while we must do the most with the resources we’ve been given, we must also be good stewards of our future and develop green energy to grow the energy-sector jobs of tomorrow. My son’s grandchildren might not have an oil and gas industry to support their economy…
Social Security is a lifeline for many, and it allows our seniors to retire with dignity. Half of America's seniors would fall below the poverty line without their Social Security checks. I have pledged to protect our seniors by protecting the Social Security benefits that they have earned, now and in the future. I would oppose efforts to raise the retirement age, to slash benefits, or to privatize it. I believe we must strengthen Social Security and make it easier for Americans to save for their retirement through automatic enrollment in retirement programs at their workplaces. …
Affordable Care Act
I was not in Congress when the Affordable Care Act was passed but I worked tirelessly to fix it while I was there. The ACA has provided healthcare services to thousands of Texans in TX-23 who previously had no healthcare options and my staff and I worked to help those people navigate the complex system. Unlike most other members of Congress, I voted against giving members of Congress a special exemption from Obamacare.
During my time in the Texas Legislature and in Congress, I was relentlessly focused on reigniting the American Dream by working night and day on those things that historically created good jobs and made our economy strong — small businesses, entrepreneurs, and an inclusive and thriving middle class. I will continue to be a strong proponent for small businesses since they are the engines of economic growth in our communities. I will fight to keep existing jobs and attract new ones. I will also encourage companies to keep jobs here at home, by closing tax loopholes for corporations…
